Compounding is the mixing of drugs by a compounding pharmacist or chemist to fit the unique needs of a patient. Before the mass production of medication became the norm, compounding was a routine among pharmacists. Community pharmacists who have experience with compounding techniques are now less common but there are several in Sydney. Compounding may be done for medically necessary reasons, such as to change the form of the medication from a solid pill to a liquid, to avoid a non-essential ingredient due to allergies or to obtain the exact dose needed.
