Snacking can help you sustain your energy throughout the day. But when you feel groggy, it’s probably because you’re eating unhealthy and processed food. Healthy snacks rich in fibre, protein and healthy fats can fuel your mind and body to keep you functioning at the highest level. Fight off the afternoon slump with an energy boost from these healthy snacks!

Oatmeal

You shouldn’t only enjoy oatmeal during breakfast. It’s a simple, scrumptious treat you can enjoy any time of the day. Mix and match a dash of honey or maple syrup with a handful of nuts, cinnamon, berries or fruit slices to make your whole-grain snack exciting. It’s so effortless to make; you can even pop one serving in a mug in your office microwave!

Nuts

Walnuts alone are also a fun munch. They’re super nutritious — packed with healthy fats and the highest antioxidants in any nut! Just don’t go overboard and snack on them like a chipmunk. A healthy serving of about 14 walnut halves can give you enough nutrients. You can also nibble on other nuts, such as almonds, pistachios, peanuts or cashews. You just have to watch out for too much salt and sugar in your snack, especially your nut butter.

Eggs

How about a protein-rich hard-boiled egg for a snack? They taste good on their own, but you can sprinkle sea salt, pepper or even a dash of something spicy, like your favourite hot sauce, to get you fired up for the rest of the day.

Mint

Do you want something warm and refreshing? Why not enjoy a hot cup of mint tea to tickle your senses? Just be wary of tea blends, though; they may have added sugar. Be sure to read the label or simply brew some mint from a fresh plant. If you prefer something cold, you can also try infusing your water with peppermint to quench your thirst. These herbs are very low maintenance; you’ll be surprised how easily you can grow them at home.

Protein Smoothie

A protein smoothie can be a life-saver when you feel hungry and need something more substantial until your next meal. These smoothies are flavourful, filling and, more importantly, nutritious! They’re also so easy to prepare and have so many flavours to choose from! You can add just about anything into your shake, whether it be fruits, vegetables, seeds or nuts. Many love them as they’re the easiest way to increase your protein intake. While there may be a wide array of protein powders available in the market, you can also opt for Greek yoghurt or silken tofu to add protein to your smoothie. There are just so many flavours and recipes to try!

Salad

Salads are super simple to make. Just toss some greens and veggies into a bowl, add a dollop of dressing or olive oil, and you’re ready to go! Just make sure not to drown your salad with a dressing, and you’ll have a super healthy snack! You can try a few combinations of vegetables. How about a few leafy bits of spinach for fibre and antioxidants, some carrots for vitamin A, and maybe a bit of berry for more antioxidants and extra flavour!

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolates are healthy. They are rich in fibre, iron, magnesium, copper, manganese, antioxidants and other minerals. These desserts can boost brain function and heart health. Just make sure they’re within the 70–80% cocoa range. They’re quite bitter, so it would be good to pair them with a contrasting taste. Try to eat them with a banana, mandarin or orange. Having them with nuts for added texture makes them taste better as well. 

Popcorn

So maybe the prepackaged microwave popcorn is not so healthy, but popping it on your stove stripped of heavy oils, cheese and butter will surely make a healthy and crunchy snack! You’ll be surprised by how healthy popcorn is; it can regulate blood sugar, lower cholesterol levels, improve digestion, protect against chronic diseases, delay ageing and even help reduce weight. 

Hummus

Made from chickpeas and sesame seed paste, hummus certainly has the flavours to make any snack taste incredible. It’s also nutritious, and enriched in folate, vitamin B6 and iron. So cut up some vegetables or apples, grab some salt-free crackers and enjoy this tasty treat!
