Ask your GP what tests they would recommend for your age and note how often you should take them. Depending on your family history, they may also recommend tests to monitor your:

  • Kidney Function

Am I at a Healthy Weight?

It’s uncomfortable to talk about, but being overweight or obese can put you at risk of many illnesses, such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes and various cancers. Being underweight also exposes you to a weakened immune system or it can be an indication of certain conditions, like anaemia or osteoporosis. So don’t be hesitant to step on a scale and discuss with your doctor your weight issues or concerns.

What Healthy Practices Should I Adopt to Improve My Wellness?

General wellness and wellbeing is a broad category covering everything from stress management to exercise to sleeping habits. Discuss specific health issues bothering you with your GP and ask for actionable plans to help you commit to long-term lifestyle change. Try and note down your thoughts and questions as they come to you in the days leading up to your appointment.

Should I Get Screened for STIs?

Another uncomfortable topic that needs to get addressed is your reproductive health. STI screening should be a regular part of your healthy lifestyle, especially if you’re sexually active. You may be carrying an STI and are asymptomatic; this puts your partners at risk. Don’t be afraid to discuss with your doctor your sexual history and request a screening.

Am I Due for Any Vaccines?

You may have received the most critical vaccines during your childhood; but there are additional shots you’ll need in some circumstances or when you reach a certain age to prevent illness. For example, you’ll need specific vaccinations to help your child build antibodies for certain disorders when you get pregnant. Senior citizens need vaccinations for pneumococcal and shingles. Not to mention, the COVID-19 vaccines that everyone is encouraged to get to help subdue the dangerous and potentially lethal effects of the pandemic.

Should I Schedule a Follow-Up Appointment?

Don’t leave your doctor without scheduling your next appointment. It’s easy to get distracted by life and neglect going to the doctor. At the end of your session, inquire with your doctor if you need to follow up on any issues too.
